Dry skin in winter
Dry Skin Is a Sign to Change Your Skincare
Winter is upon us, which can mean dry, itchy, and cracked skin. For some, the look and feel of their skin can change dramatically during the winter, while for others, nothing changes. A little effort and care can make the big difference , that your skin needs, to show you its better, healthier side.
As a result, you may need to change your routine to compensate for the lack of moisture in your skin that results from cold or dry air in heated indoor spaces.
What causes “winter” skin?
Dry skin almost always means that we are faced with a lack of moisture in the cold air, exposure to heaters and thick clothing that cause irritation. Itchy, dry skin is very common in the cold winter months, when the skin becomes dehydrated and irritated, loses its elasticity and starts to crack and itch, and later can even cause serious damage to the skin barrier – dermatitis, sensitive skin, redness, etc.
Winter can be harsh, especially for your skin. The dry heat from radiators dries out moisture, and the cold removes your skin’s natural oils. Chapped lips and dry skin don’t have to be a way of life in the colder months. There are some simple ways to pamper your skin by adding softness and suppleness.
Stay hydrated
Eat plenty of essential fatty acids (EFAs), especially omega-3s (found in avocados and oily fish) and omega-6s (found in nuts, whole grains, and flaxseed oil), which keep your skin hydrated and clear.
Avoid dehydration by drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily and reducing your intake of caffeinated beverages and alcohol.
Moisturize your skin frequently
Use natural, herbal moisturizers. Avoid chemical-based lotions. They should contain ingredients that help retain water in the skin. Keep in mind that lotion or cream are the best friends of skin that is exposed to harsh external factors during the winter months. Apply Boroplus cream after showering or bathing, as dry skin that is still damp from the shower will retain moisture due to the protective layer (cream) applied. Don’t wait for dry skin to damage the skin barrier, so start taking care of it as soon as possible.
Humidify the air
Use a humidifier to replace lost moisture. If you don’t have a humidifier, you can place a bowl of water or a wet towel in the corner of each room or on a radiator.
